I don't think I'm alone in the opinion that the ride gear in the Pokémon Sun and Moon games should be customisable, in most part due to the normal gear really not looking very good. I decided to remedy this by making the colours clash a lot less with a texture hack. It was Trans Day of Visibility on the day that I started, so I decided to make the outfit trans pride flag coloured.
The process was more complex than I'd expected. Firstly, the filesystem is more obfuscated than any other game I've come across, making it a challenge to identify which file the gear model and textures are stored in. My next issue was with applying the edit - every other texture mod that I could find used emulator features to perform the texture replacement, but I wanted my mod to work on real hardware (otherwise what's the point?). The model format used by the games is relatively undocumented and uneditable with current tools, but fortunately I recognised the texture format and eventually found a way to repack the textures back with the model data.
I think this simple colour change improves the gear a lot, and I doubt I'll ever play the game without this mod in the future.
I know the mod isn't currently compatible with the Ultra games, but I'll look into making it work with them once I get around to playing them.
